Astronomy: Why Kids Should be Interested with It

Kids are naturally inclined to explore things that they don't yet know. To them, curiosity of the unknown is a constant force that drives them to investigate. Hands down, astronomy has continuously intrigued the minds of even the most educated men that ever lived—think of Galileo Galilei, Nicholas Copernicus, Johannes Kepler, Claudius Ptolemy, Edmund Halley (and the list goes on and on and on).

The planets, their moons, the sun, all have a mystifying effects on any man, or child for that matter. Studying them would explain life and why it continuously exists. It also explains the forces that move the universe. Nowadays, the library isn't the only source of knowledge for kids all over the world. Unlike our ‘forefathers’, there are now planetariums and online sources of knowledge that not only stimulate the mind but also your kids’ eyes.

Currently, there are several websites for kids on the subject of astronomy. One example is KidsAstronomy.com. This website offers several features such as:

  1.      Solar System—this feature discusses the planets, moons, comets and asteroids on the solar system. Each of them are named and described in a way that kids would understand. To add to that, there are also colorful pictures that would stimulate visual learning.
  2.      Deep Space—it has most of the features of Solar System but this has a wider coverage. This feature discusses additional information on galaxies, quasars, nebula and black holes.
  3.      Exploration—this portion explains the use of telescopes on exploring space, space shuttles, the future space crafts and even the planet Mars.
  4.      Observation—enhances the ‘investigation skills’ of our young friends. This section emphasizes on finding stars on certain planets and observing the stars in our own sky.

Aside from all these features, the website also offers games and images that the kids can click on which eventually explain the use of that image. The site also has maps that could help the kids locate certain stars or planets, it also has news that discuss the latest ‘happenings’ in the universe. There are also online classes and forums that kids can join to interact with other kids with similar interest.

Learning astronomy and all other aspects of this science is now easy for kids of this generation. With all of this information available at the touch of button or a click of the mouse, kids would grow up with great knowledge and appreciation for the Hand that created it all. Wouldn’t you?
